21 & 22 Weeks (5 months)

This has been one of the most exciting weeks for Ava. She had her very first Christmas and she got all kinds of toys to play with. It was exciting for us because she is so interactive now! We lay her on the floor and she can just lay on her belly and play for the longest time. She scoots around to get to stuff and the other day she rolled from the rug in her room all the way to the doorway. She is mobile people! We have these snowmen Christmas sheets on our bed that she loves to roll over on her tummy and grab at the colorful snowmen. I've gone in a couple of times this week to get her from her nap and I'll find her in there playing with her blanket or with this little glow worm that her nana gave her. She just rolls over and starts playing. She is also loving her play mirror that I put in her crib, she'll just stare at herself for the longest time. She is reaching for toys with both hands and bringing everything to her mouth and still sucking on all of her fingers.

Yesterday we took her out to Nana's for a visit and we left her there for about an hour while we ran up to the store. We thought she may do okay now that she's older but she did the same thing she did last time, cried herself to sleep. As soon as she saw Mommy though she was all smiles. I guess the separation anxiety is in full force now. She was doing something similar on Christmas at Grandmother and Grandad's. We told Irene that she's probably going to have a rough couple of weeks when she starts coming next week to watch Ava. She said she is fully prepared :)

Now that Ava is 5 months old we started her on something other than cereal to eat. Her first non cereal solid meal was Avacados and she loved it! I mashed up 1/2 of an avacado and watered it down for her. She ate the entire thing! The next day I fed her the other half but she wasn't as impressed this time and she only ate about 1/4 of it. Yesterday I had a glass that I was drinking out of and she pulled it to her mouth and drank from it. She's such a big girl! Last night I had dinner with friends and Steve stayed home with Ava. When the phone rang during dinner I was sure it was Steve saying "she's crying and I can't get her to stop, when are you coming home?" Instead it was Steve asking me to bring him dinner from the restaurant. He said he was giving Ava a bath and she was playing and happy and to have a good time. Amazing! He even gave her a baby massage after her bath and got her to go night night and take her bottle again. He's getting really good at this daddy thing and he's really enjoying it too. :)

Monday the 5th is my first day back at work. I'm excited to get back into the groove of work but miserable about leaving my baby. The crying started up again yesterday morning. I'm trying to be strong. I'm sure once I get back to work and into my schedule I'll feel better.
While we were at Nana's, Courtney came over with little Trent and we were able to get a few pictures of the babies together. They were too cute. Ava kept trying to touch Trent, but when she gets a hold of something now she puts a death grip on it. We had to watch her closely so she wouldn't bully poor little Trent. They were so cute together though!

Hey You..get over here..I wanna tell you something

How did I become such a "hippie"??

I had a baby that's how! I was just reflecting on the last year of my life and realized that I'm what my friend Kelley would call a "hippie mom". How did I get this way!? When I was pregnant I skipped over all of the sections of baby books that talked about attachment parenting and co-sleeping because I was positive my baby would be sleeping in her crib, and I probably would just push her around in her stroller more than I would wear her. I probably wouldn't have time to make my own baby food, and I would try to breast feed but if it didn't work..then there was always formula. So what happened? Ava got here and changed me for life! These are the things that I realized make me a "hippie mom":

I now co-sleep with my child and think it's the best thing ever. It wasn't my intention but she quickly taught us that if we were going to ever sleep it was going to be with her in the bed. From the moment she was born, she would only sleep if she was right next to her mommy all snuggled to me. I love sleeping next to her and seeing that smiling face first thing in the morning. I feel like it's my quiet cuddle time with her and best of all, the entire family sleeps! The crib didn't even see Ava until she was 4 months old and I had to sleep train her to nap in it. Nighttime is still for mommy though :) Even Steve likes having our little wee one in the bed with us. We had to take our featherbed off of the bed to allow her to sleep safely in our bed and I now wake up with a stiff back and sore hips but it's all worth it to me. Has just reminded us how old this mattress is and that it's time to invest in a new one! The poor pups also got the boot and have to sleep in their kennels at night now. The plan is to move her to her crib between 9-12 months....Be strong Kelley, you can do it! Steve said I must mention that I did actually get her to sleep in her bassinett at 3-4 months but after an hour or two I couldn't stand it any longer and as soon as she made a peep I scooped her up and brought her to bed with me. Not to mention I checked to see if she was breathing about 52 times. Every morning we can tell when she's starting to wake up and we watch her open her eyes, stretch her arms and legs, toot, and then give us a big ole toothless grin before the baby babbling begins. We get the biggest kick out of it. It just fills my heart so full it could burst.

I'm a stickler about breastfeeding her and making sure I don't do anything to jeapordize that. So much so that I've been more than willing to cut my favorite things out of my own diet to make sure she is healthy and happy (I sure do miss a big tall glass of milk, cheese, butter, alcohol and caffeinated beverages) One of my biggest fears is declining milk supply or early weaning. And to think I used to get creeped out by breastfeeding and wasn't sure I'd ever do it. I never knew what an emotional thing it is. I have no shame now. If she's hungry and someone has a problem with it, that's their problem. The hooter hider was the greatest thing ever invented (next to the epidural of course!)

Now that she's starting solids I'm going to try making my own baby food! Steve and I started eating organic as much as we could a year ago when we realized how much junk was used to preserve and grow non-organic foods. Not only will we know exactly what she's eating (minus the preservatives and ingredients you can't pronounce), but it's much cheaper than buying jars of baby food! Not to say I won't ever feed her jarred baby food because I surely will.

We both wear our baby a lot and not because we have a weird idea about attachment parenting but because she loves it! I ended up having to go out and buy a baby sling so that I could still get things done while she napped. She also gets a baby massage after her bath every night.

We are going to start teaching Ava sign language. I'm ordering the book and CD on it and should start working with her soon. Several of my girlfriends have done this and I'm amazed at their children and what they can do.

The only thing I have not done yet is cloth diapers. I think it's a fabulous idea and may do it one day but as of right now I don't do laundry enough to justify it. I can just see it now...last poopy diapers and no clean diapers left!! That's what would happen. Not only that but the washing machine is in our bedroom so we don't need our bedroom smelling like baby poop or Magnum eating poop sandwiches for dinner until I can get around to doing laundry.

I'm some think I'm a little overboard about the things I'm most passionate about (like breastfeeding), but it's amazing how having someone you've created in your life can change your way of thinking. I've never been a mom who freaks when the pacifier falls on the floor, the dog licks her, she has a dog hair on her face, or about taking her out in public, but I am a freak about what she eats and her sleep routine & schedule. I'm the mom who rocks and nurses her baby to sleep, holds her when she wants to be held, but lets her cry sometimes too, and breaks out the video camera everytime she does something only a mom would think was cute and sends it out to all of her friends . I like changing diapers and spit up doesn't phase me. Like I told my friend today (who was feeling embarrassed that her toddler still takes a paci at night) you read & hear a lot of things you should never do like "don't let them sleep in the bed with you", "don't let them nurse to sleep", "don't let them have a pacifier after 6 months", "don't spoil them by holding them too much", "give them formula at night because they are hungry and they'll sleep better", "crying it out is cruel", "crying it out is the only way" and someone will always be judging you and your parenting choices, but I just try take all of the information in (and it's a LOT of information because I read a LOT of stuff and ask a ton of questions of my mom friends) and use my instinct and a little guidance from Ava to determine what works best for her. That's all we can do as moms. What a lifechanging experience it is to be a mom and learn new things about your baby as well as yourself along the way.

I'm so fortunate to have other mommies (gotta give a shout out to Erin, Christine, my sisters, Julie, Tiffany, Desta, Kelley, Amanda and Rhonda) to get advice from, bounce ideas off of and to make me feel better when I'm not sure I've made the right choice or which route to take.

By the way this post was just to share some of the funny things I realized about myself and not in response to anyone or anything, so don't worry if you think you've offended me because you most likely have not :)

Merry Christmas Everyone from Ava, Steve, Kelley, Casper, Biscuit & Alligator Head (Magnum) Hendrickson!!!!

20 weeks

Steve watched Ava for two days in a row this past weekend. I had to drive out to spring for a hair appointment with my cousin on Saturday and I put Ava down for a nap just before I left. She woke up about and hour later (she usually sleeps for a good 2.5 hours) and Steve panicked when he didn't have the baby bjorn because she loves hanging out in that thing. When I got home they were sitting outside on the patio. Ava was sitting in her bumbo chair with her pink coat on and a huge grin on her face. Nothing like a baby who is excited to see you! Sunday I was invited to a cookie party so Saturday night I made two batches of cookies that turned out awful. Look people, I don't bake! After confirmation from Steve that the cookies sucked, I woke up early at 7 on sunday and made a new batch. This time they came out pretty good and off I went to my party leaving Steve at home with Ava. He said not to worry because he had "a plan" and whatever I do for goodness sakes leave the baby bjorn! I was so proud, he even was able to soothe her down for a nap and her put her down in her crib. He told me later that he rocked her and sang to her and off to sleep she went. What a sweet daddy!
When my cousin Christine and I were little our parents always chopped our hair off and never let us grow it long. We forever had those cheesy bowl cuts or Dorothy Hamel cuts, so we would put long nightgowns on our heads and pretend we had long hair. We would even put pony tail holders around the nightgown so it looked like we had long ponytails. Crystal Gayle was our idol. So this next picture is dedicated to my cousin Christine.

Look Aunt Christine, I have long hair!

That naked cowboy in NYC aint got nothin on me

At 20 weeks Ava is now:

  • laughing
  • rolls from back to front
  • rolls from front to back
  • screeches really loudly and babbles constantly
  • imitates mom and dads facial expressions
  • blows raspberries

  • brings everything to her mouth and sucks on it
  • eats cereal
  • sits supported
  • pulls herself up and holds herself and head up while on her tummy

19 weeks

I can't believe my baby will have been in our lives for 20 weeks tomorrow! She's growing so fast and my maternity leave is quickly coming to an end. I cry a little each day at the thought of not spending every morning with her, and missing out on her daily activities. Nothing makes me happier than waking up and seeing that little smiling face right next to me. The good news is that I am going back at 30 hours a week and will get one full day off and a 1/2 day on Friday to be with her. We feel so fortunate that her grandmother will be coming over to watch her and play with her every day and that we don't have to pack her up and drop her off at daycare. At least she'll get to stay in the comfort of her own home with her same routines and with someone that loves her.

Last weekend we took Ava to the mall to get her picture made with Santa. She wore her Christmas dress that her Memaw bought her with matching stockings. She did great! She sat right in Santa's lap and smiled big for the camera. She is too funny because it seems like she knows that she is supposed to smile for the camera because everytime I aim a camera at her she smiles big! (except for the picture here on the left) If I had a scanner I'd post the santa picture. She loves the sound of her own voice and spends a lot of time screeching and yelling as loud as she can.
Ava and I have both been sick with a cold this week. It hasn't phased her much in that she still plays and smiles just as much as she always does. She is getting better but I seem to be getting worse. I'm really hoping that tomorrow I will wake up and feel a lot better! Ava giggled at Magnum again today when he licked her toes. The dogs seem to be the only thing she thinks is amusing enough to laugh at. We have to watch her because if given the chance she'll get an ear or a chunk of skin on one of the dogs and put a death grip on it. She always goes for Biscuit's ears. Speaking of the dogs...they are so trained now that they know when we put Ava in her infant seat that we are leaving. Today we put her in her infant seat and both dogs ran and got into their kennels. They sat there patiently and waited for us to come over and close the door. How great is that!
Magnum has been so much better these days. He got a little unruly there for a while but now that I've been home with him he's now obeying and understands what our commands mean.

18 Weeks - First "Solid" Meal

Well we got with the times and got a webcam so that gigi and papi could see Ava and talk to her. It was so fun being able to see them and for them to be able to see Ava! Now they will get to watch her do some of the cute stuff she does. We also got my sister Brenda logged on and we talk to them via skype. The other night her cousins Kennedee and Lauren sang Twinkle Twinkle little star to her while she watched them on the screen. I love technology!

Steve was back to work this week and it was just Ava and I during the day again. It was nice having him home. He would get Ava up in the morning and play with her so I could get a little sleep and stretch out in the bed for an hour. She loved her one on one time with daddy. He still does it on the weekends though! Ava has come down with a cold or allergies (again) and has a runny nose and a cough. She is still a pretty happy baby when she's awake though! She had her first "solid" meal of cereal this week and she LOVED it! She was gobbling it up and amazingly swallowed it all. I didn't have much mess to clean up at all. We figured it wouldn't be a problem for her because she has been eyeing our plates and watching us eat for a while now.

Saturday night we finally heard her laugh! The dogs were playing nearby and she was watching them. As soon as Biscuit looked at her she would squeal and let out a little chuckle. We were so excited and of course I ran to get the video camera to capture the first giggle. I've been waiting for her to do it again. She just loves her pup Biscuit.

Speaking of Biscuit, Steve and I have decided she is in need of dog therapy or dog prozac. Not only has she started screaming like someone is dognapping her when a stranger tries to pick her up, but now she's gotten worse at the vet. Steve took them in on Saturday to get their shots and he said it was insane the way she acted. The minute he put her on the table she started screaming and yelping. The vet hadn't even touched her yet. Steve said at one point she didn't even take a breath, just screamed and all the other vets and techs were coming in the room to see what was going on. The vet just stood there with the thermometer in her rear and waved at all of them like (I'm just taking her temperature I'm not performing major surgery on her or anything). They said she was a major drama queen. Then Magnum tried to pick a fight with a pitbull in the waiting room. One lady said "um excuse me mister but have you looked in the mirror lately?" They were calling him Napoleon. haha. Glad I didn't go on that vet trip.

mmm cereal yummy in my tummy

mmm more cereal mom!

First Thanksgiving - 17 Weeks

We celebrated our first Thanksgiving with Ava! Holiday's are so much sweeter when you have a child. When we first arrived at Aunt Bonnie's my Uncle Mike picked Ava up out of her car seat and she instantly stuck that bottom lip out and started fussing. We are now experiencing separation anxiety, more so with men than women. When Steve held her she clung to him like a little monkey and buried her face in his chest. She watched everyone very closely and got excited anytime Tyler came near her. She just loves Tyler! Once she decided everyone was okay she started letting people hold her. She wore everyone out playing jump jump jumparoo in their laps. She even took a nap in the crib that Aunt Bonnie has set up for the babies. Baby Trent was also there for his very first Thanksgiving. :)

Tyler was a hoot as usual. He wanted to hold Ava so bad and kept begging to hold the baby. Everyone kept telling him "No Tyler not right now" finally he got frustrated and yelled "Just let me hold the dumb baby!" We were all cracking up!

Ava also loves to shop! Steve and I went to the outlet malls on Monday and she just loved looking around and taking in everything. Then I took her with me on my annual Christmas Shopping trip with my mom. I was really worried about how she would do, but she was great! Again she loved her baby bjorn and just went to sleep in it when she wanted to nap. Last year when we went on our shopping trip I had really bad morning sickness and was nauseated the entire day. We had to make a stop for preggie pops and emetrol just to get me through. This year it was refreshing to not only feel great but to have my little girl with me! I was happy to find a nursing lounge in the mall. It was all set up with a glider and a changing table. That made things so easy! Ava even helped Mom pick out her Christmas dress. Mom would hold up a dress in front of her and then when she held up this one dress Ava laughed and cooed so that was it! I think I've created a little shopper.

I should also mention that Ava rolled over from her tummy to her back for the first time. I went into her room to pick her up from her nap and she was on her back. I'm so proud of her! She's still pulling everything to her mouth (especially our fingers and hands) and exploring them.
